Canada Does It Again – “Allergy Friendly” Hotel and Restaraunt Listing
I spent some time researching our Allergy Friendly Canadian friends this weekend and arrived at Niagara Anaphylaxis Support &
Knowledge or www.nask.ca, since we’ve been amassing such great Canadian travel information I thought I would contact them to find out what else might be available to food allergy families. To my surprise, a whole lot more!
The email from Cindy at NASK is pasted below..and please make sure you read the article from the Globe & Mail. The article lists allergy friendly hotels and restaurants by city in Canada! It’s fantastic & makes me want to take a road trip to Canada today!!!
Hi – As you observed, there is a high level of awareness towards peanut allergy, especially in southern Ontario. Most places do not use peanut oil, and peanut butter typically is served in self-contained packages, if at all.
Some allergy aware chains are Montana’s, Kelsey’s, The Keg, Pizza Pizza, McDonald’s, Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet. There are probably others that we have never tried.
Large grocery chains such as Zhers, SuperStore, No Frills and Sobey’s carry many snack foods that are certified nut/peanut-free. Look for these manufacturers, and be sure to read labels carefully: Dare, Kelloggs, President’s Choice, Chapman’s Ice Cream.
In 2005, the Delta Chelsea in Toronto had a ‘whitecoat program’ – though I don’t know if it’s still in operation.
Delta Chelsea: 33 Gerrard St. W.; 1-800-243-5732; deltahotels.com. This spring, the hotel chain introduced its “Our Kitchen is Your Kitchen” concept, whereby all menu requests — additions, substitutions — are satisfied. Spell out your allergies, mention “Our Kitchen is Your Kitchen,” or simply request a specially prepared meal. Another new feature is the “whitecoat program,” in which the chef visits your table to discuss the particulars of your meal.
