According to the February 8, 2009 St. John Vianney Church Bulletin, they have officially gone PEANUT FREE. Located on Southwestern Blvd in West Seneca, NY they are taking the lead!!! Thank you Msgr. Gallagher!!!!

The article is located on page 3 of the bulletin under the “From the Pastor’s Desk” section and reads as follows:

“Peanut allergies are persistent and extensive. In an attempt to guarantee the safety of many of our children, I would like to make the church “peanut free.” The crying room as already been established as a peanut free zone, but the entire Church needs to be so named. Peanut allergies can be nearly fatal for children. The slightest trace of the allergen can trigger a reaction. If anyone brings peanuts or peanut products into the church during Mass or gathering room events, the protein from the peanut remains on their hands. So anything they touch (tables, pews, chairs, railings, bathrooms, etc.) could contain the peanut protein. If an allergic child touches this and puts his/her fingers in the mouth or rubs their eyes, they could have a life-threatening reaction. Please check your snacks and make sure that they do not contain peanuts or are produced in facilities where the product comes in contact with peanuts. Most snack packages mention the contents and the production facilities. Not only would this vigilance be a good deed, it is essential for the health of allergic children. Peanut butter is a celibate priest’s best friend but with allergies and salmonella, I’m going to change my eating habits!”

Recently Wilton Industries has changed it’s manufacturing of “sprinkles” to a peanut facility. They are a widely distributed item, making it difficult to treat our little ones to festive Holiday cookies and treats.

I contacted Signature Brands, makers of Cake Mate Decors and they state their products are clearly labeled and the majority of their “sprinkles”, icings and gels, and candy cake decor are Peanut FREE!!! I have found them at Tops.

However, always read the packaging. Their CLUB PACKS are NOT safe nor are the Fruit Flavored Decors.

I am working with Wegmans to bring the products back into their stores as well.

On a positive note, I have found a company selling fondant that should be free of peanuts and tree nuts www.fondarific.com

Hello everyone – We just learned that Eucerin, makers of the top eczema treating cream, manufactures their cream in a facility with NUTS!!! That is right, if you are treating your child’s eczema with Eucerin, you could be causing the symptoms!

A close friend of mine has a recently diagnosed peanut & egg child. His eczema wasn’t subsiding. She took him in for further testing because there had to be something more wrong with him. While talking to the doctor, they told her not to use Eucerin because it is cross-contaminated with nuts.

The packaging nor the website clearly states this information.

January 27, 2009: I received the offical word from Tops this morning, they discontinued selling the Tim Horton’s peanut muffins and donuts in the carry out cafe. However, they are utilizing the remaining inventory first.

Any Tim’s donuts & muffins they do sell will be baked in the bakery.

Thank you all for your help!!! We achieved a Victory!!!!

________________________________________________________________________________________

Just this week I heard a rumor they have halted the sale of peanut donuts & moved the donuts themselves into the bakery area. Awaiting a call from Tops Corporate to confirm!

I received a call from Tops about 2 weeks after my email and about 3weeks ago now, they plan to renegotiate the deal with Tim Horton’s. Either they will stop selling peanut donuts or they will prepare them in an enclosed area. I asked them to please keep me apprised of the results. No update has yet to be provided.

It has come to our attention, Tops has partnered with Tim Horton’s to provide Tim’s donuts in their Carry Out Cafe’s.

Cafe employees will remove frozen donuts – including peanut, from boxes and place them on carry out cafe bakware. Load them on trays & transport them to the bakery. They will return them to the carry out cafe for glaze & dip into nuts, coconut, etc. Finally, display them in the cafe for sale & continued handling.

So far the only cross contamination safety measure is, they will be transporting/baking the peanut donuts on the bottom shelf. In the event any nuts fall they will fall to the bottom of the oven/floor rather than into another pan.

They also cook the rotisserie chickens, pizza, subs and other foods in that area.

Please be aware of possible cross contamination!

We will be contacting Tops regarding our concerns with this idea…please do the same!!!

We found a couple cool things to help our son & others understand his peanut allergy.

This book “Mommy, Is This Safe to Eat? A Guide for Preschoolers Allergic to Peanuts and Tree Nuts” by Christina Black, is a 20 page book with large pictures of foods my son cannot eat. It was a great way to explain to him why he can’t grab things off a table at a party and to discuss cross contamination.

My other life saver is the “Beyond a Peanut Is this safe?” flashcard set. http://www.beyondapeanut.com/ There are cards for a variety of different foods and home products with examples of cross contamination. I leave mine right out on the table for visitors to flip through. These are a great resource for the holidays!!!
