As new food allergy parents, many questions arise. A large part of managing food allergies begins in the grocery store. Eating healthy, home cooked meals becomes a vital part of our lives. Where do I begin? Well, many foods you already eat may be OK – fruits & vegetables are typically void of the top 8 allergens. Pre-packaged meats are also typical starting places. Watch out for centrally processed products in your store, for example Wegmans shares prep areas for the bakery, deli, cheese shop & some prepared foods areas. They will also tell you they cannot guarantee the top 8 allergens are not found in any of their in-store prepared or sliced foods.

Now in particular, my child has a peanut allergy. Therefore we can eat foods like Teddy Grahams and Goldfish(not cinnamon), even Oreos! Children with other allergies will need to stay away from these foods & the “Nature’s Market” section in Wegmans has a nice selection of Wheat free products as well as dairy & top 8 allergen free foods.

It is important to ALWAYS read the labels on each package purchased, each time it is purchased. Manufacturers can change facilities or processes at any time. These messages are meant to be a starting place to faciliate the process & NEVER do they replace the need for parents to READ LABELS!!!

Hello everyone! I have a few updates to make your Easter safe & fun!!!

Just found Gimbal’s jelly beans at CVS. They are peanut, dairy, egg, gluten and gelatin free & kosher!

Hershey’s chocolate bunnies not labeled as cross-contaminated with peanuts from Target

Peeps are a peanut free food as well as PEZ!!!

Wegmans chocolate chips are free of peanuts, milk & eggs….easy to melt into shapes!

Curly’s restaurant can make Gluten & egg free rolls for your Easter table. Contact Krista to order at 824-9716.

Costanzo’s Bakery makes peanut free rolls. For safety they must be picked up from the bakery not purchased from a 3rd party. 656-9093

We’ve recently heard of ALS Bakery 570-9888. They have dairy-free bread, don’t do gluten-free but they are NOT peanut-free. They use corn oil, no peanut oil, however they make PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES.. and they use a transfat free shortening. The bakery is on south park in between milestrip and big tree road you need to order a day or so ahead, they are also at the E. Aurora farmers market in the summer!

Feel free to add your commments!!

Happy Easter!

Costanzo’s can’t guarantee eggless, but peanutless.

With Easter around the corner, Federal Meats at the Southgate is great with accommodating customers with food allergies. They will cut the meat in the back, pack it back up and set it aside for so that it doesn’t even go near the case. They have mayo based prepared foods in their case and could potentially contaminate the meat you are looking to buy.

Recently Wilton Industries has changed it’s manufacturing of “sprinkles” to a peanut facility. They are a widely distributed item, making it difficult to treat our little ones to festive Holiday cookies and treats.

I contacted Signature Brands, makers of Cake Mate Decors and they state their products are clearly labeled and the majority of their “sprinkles”, icings and gels, and candy cake decor are Peanut FREE!!! I have found them at Tops.

However, always read the packaging. Their CLUB PACKS are NOT safe nor are the Fruit Flavored Decors.

I am working with Wegmans to bring the products back into their stores as well.

On a positive note, I have found a company selling fondant that should be free of peanuts and tree nuts www.fondarific.com
